Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is played with one pack of 52 cards.

Game

The game starts with mandatory bets (blind), then each player is given two cards (hole cards), which are to be seen and used only by him. Other five cards are gradually dealt face up on the table, the cards are common for all players (community card). First three cards of the common cards (flop) are dealt all at the same time, fourth (turn) and fifth (river) are dealt one at a time.

A player can stay in the game without betting (check), match the bet (call), place a bet (bet), increase the bet of the player before him (raise) or put the cards down (fold). A game of poker ends with displaying cards to other players and comparing winning combinations (showdown). A player with the highest combination wins the bank (pot).

The game is divided into four rounds of betting, the betting goes round the table from left to right in clockwise direction. Betting starts from the position next to the dealer, this position is shifted to the next player after each game. The position of a dealer is marked with a respective chip (dealer button).

Blind bets (1st round of betting)

Before the game starts, two players to the left of the dealer place a “blind” bet, it is called this way, because the players must place a bet without seeing any cards. Blind bets ensure there are money in the bank at the very beginning of a game. First player to the left of the dealer places the “small blind” (small blind bet) and the second player to the left of the dealer places the “big blind” (big blind bet).

Pre-Flop (before flop)

Now the dealing begins. Each player is given two “hole cards”, that only he can see. After this the first round of betting starts, first to play is the player to the left of the big blind, which is the third player after the dealer. This player known as “under the gun” player can:

  • Call (match)
same amount as big blind bet
  • Raise (increase)
    increase the bet
  • Fold (give up)
put your cards down and give up your bet

Since the big blind bet is on the table, it is not possible to stay in the game (check) without betting, with the exception of the player on the big blind.

Once betting gets back to the player on big blind (first full bet), this player can do the check, which means to stay in the game without adding anything into the bank. But if any player increases the bet (raise), the player on big blind has three options: he must give up, match or increase the bet again.

Flop (2nd round of betting)

The dealer puts three face up cards, same cards for all players, on the table (flop). Each player can use the cards on the table together with the ones in hand to make a winning combination. Second round of betting follows. Betting follows the same rules as in the previous round. As long as nobody places a bet, it is possible to stay in the game without betting (check), after betting though it is only possible to match the bet (call), increase the bet (raise) or put the cards down (fold).

Turn (3rd round of betting)

At turn the dealer puts the fourth common face up card on the table. This card can also be used for making the winning combination. Third round of betting follows. Betting follows the same rules as in the previous round.

River (4th round of betting)

The dealer adds a fifth card on the table (river), the last card that can be used for making the winning combination. Betting follows the same rules as in the previous round. A game of poker ends in two ways. Either one player makes other players put their cards down by betting and wins the bank without showing his cards, or there remain more players in the last round. The players then display their cards and compare their winning combinations (showdown). A player with the highest combination wins the bank (pot). If two or more players have the same combination, then the bank is equally distributed among them.
