Rules

Omaha is a card game for 2 to ten players. The goal of the game is to win as many chips from the opponents as possible. The game ends when all players decide to Fold or one of the players wins all chips from the others.

Beginning

First and foremost the position of dealer must be determined, the position is determined by dealing one face up card to each player. The player with highest card starts the game as the dealer. If two players happen to have the same highest card, the order is then decided based on the cards suit. Card value based on the suit is as follows: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs.

Right before dealing, the two players to the left of the dealer have small blind and big blind in consecutive order. Big blind equals the lowest amount for entering the game, small blind is a half of it. So if the big blind is 50 CZK, then small blind is 25 CZK.

Once the players set the blinds, the game can begin. The dealer starts dealing cards from the player to his left (the one who placed small blind) and continues in clockwise direction. He deals in this manner one card at a time until all players have four cards.

Betting

Once all cards have been dealt, a round of betting before flop begins. The betting ends when:

  • All players have played
  • Those players, who haven’t put their cards down have matched the last bet

Flop

Once the first round of betting has finished, the dealer burns one card and deals first three cards on the table (Flop). Once flop is dealt, another round of betting starts. This round ends when all bets have been matched.

Turn

Once the round after flop is finished, the dealer burns one card and turns one card on the table (Turn). At this time there are 4 cards on the table and another round of betting begins. The game is again started by the player to the left of the dealer, who has cards. This round is conducted in the same manner as the round after flop.

River

Once the round after turn has finished, the dealer burns one card and turns one card to the table (River). At the moment there are 5 cards face up on the table. This is the final round and it goes on like the previous round.

Showdown

Begins after the end of the last betting round. The showdown principle is simple, the player with the best combination wins the pot. The winning combination is the same as in Texas Hold’em, but it must be made exactly out of any two cards in hand and any 3 cards on the table. This is the actual difference from Texas Hold’em. In Texas Hold’em you have two cards in hand and it is up to you, if you use them for making the winning combination. In Omaha you have four cards in hand and you must use exactly two of them to make the winning combination.

The dealer announces the winner, hands him the pot, shifts the dealer button to the next player in clockwise direction and starts a new game. Small and big blind shift to the next position together with dealer.

Omaha is played either as a Limit or a Pot-limit game. Basically it is not played in No-limit version, since it is much more vivid. It is the game’s rules that keep the game in order.

Game

Once the positions of Dealer, Small blind and Big blind have been decided, the game can begin. The dealer gives 4 cards to each player.
